Суд, рассматривающий дело о разводе, доверяет заботу о ребенке матери в школьные месяцы, отцу - на время каникул. Мать снова выходит замуж и вместе с дочерью переезжает к новому мужу. Бобби постоянно грустит и думает только о том, когда же начнутся каникулы. Мать считает, что ребенок отравляет ей жизнь и было бы гораздо лучше полностью доверить ее отцу. Начинаются каникулы. Счастливая Бобби приезжает к отцу, но тот тоже готовится жениться. Бобби чувствует себя лишней. Глубоко опечалившись, она впадает в депрессию. Врач говорит обоим родителям, что вернуть девочку к нормальной жизни можно, поселив ее у кого-то из них или же отправив в интернат. Родители выбирают 2-й вариант. Теперь Бобби живет в колледже для девочек. Там у нее появляется подруга: старшая девочка, также дочь разведенных родителей, которая объясняет ей, что, как правило, если родители разведены, поначалу они приходят часто, потом - все реже, а потом отделываются лишь письмами и подарками. Девочки думают о будущем: им придется повзрослеть, чтобы обзавестись собственным домом.► 1-й фильм Ричарда Флайшера. И это уже шедевр. Поскольку фильм расположен вне традиционных жанровых рамок (в 1-ю очередь, это совсем не мелодрама), весь талант Флайшера предстает как на ладони: талант аналитика общественных отношений, для которого реализм - всегда синоним жестокости. Здесь Флайшер анализирует особое положение некоторых детей разведенных родителей, за которых отнюдь не ведется яростная борьба между бывшими супругами; наоборот, обе стороны от них отказываются. Этот отказ происходит мягко, с немалой долей стеснительности и лицемерия, которое Флайшер исследует без сочувствия и без жалости. В целом ряде сцен дети показаны наедине с собой, т. е. во всей суровой правде своего положения. Брошенные дети одиноки, и потому часто взрослеют раньше времени (в этом отношении гениальна последняя сцена).
